My career as a Cardiology Nurse Practitioner allowed me to help patients in many ways. Transitioning to health coaching has allowed me to have the greatest impact with my patients and clients! Providing the right system, the right support and the right stretch is key. I can partner with you to have the health you desire. I love to work with women and men to reverse health issues that may have developed and improve how you feel mentally and physically! It's all connected and a holistic view is essential.
My own journey to finding a healthy lifestyle was made so much easier when I found coaching! I needed the accountability and this, along with my strong sense of persistence, has helped me achieve more than I could without the help. Partnering with me as your coach may be that missing piece that will allow you to have what you really want.
My education and training completes my coaching arsenal – allowing me to provide you, the client, with the tools and methods you need to achieve your goals. The Plant-Based Nutrition Certificate offered in partnership with renowned online educator eCornell is a revolutionary online program that teaches the importance of diet and nutrition for your life. Through video presentations with over 20 experts (MDs, PhDs, RDs, RNs, etc.), research and perspectives are taught to emphasize why following a plant-based diet and lifestyle is optimal for health — including the prevention and reversal of diseases such as diabetes, heart disease and cancer.
This 12 week program is perfect for everyone transitioning to a plant based lifestyle. The program is a combination of education, support and community. There are weekly modules and workbooks, weekly contact via conference/web calling and daily emails to help you be the most successful in your transition. Three levels of support are available with integration of coaching for sustainable, long-term improvement in health. This is done as 1:1 coaching or as group coaching so get your friends together and take this journey together! Many people believe that they must give up all their favorite foods when they begin a plant based diet. That is absolutely NOT true. Start where you are and add in the good stuff is my best advice. As your health coach, I will guide you to making the changes that you are willing to make at the time you are ready to make them. Do not have an all or nothing mindset...every little bit of improvement in your eating will benefit your health!
Working with Teri as a coach has been really helpful over the past 10 weeks! She's helped me set goals and action steps, and then she follows up with me each week. It’s like having someone who has your best interests at heart to listen to you about how the week went, really hear you, and then set a plan for the upcoming week. Since working with Teri, I’ve stayed committed for the long haul because I knew I invested in myself, so giving up hasn’t been an option. What’s great though, is that by sticking with it, this is almost second nature to me now, and I can’t see moving backwards! I’ve lost 29 pounds in 15 weeks and sticking with it! Through my sessions with Teri Yunus as my health coach, I learned the difference between ‘losing’ and ‘releasing.’ Yes, I lost weight, but I also released old habits, negative thinking, dependence on prescription medications, and lack of hope about my future. I frequently tell people I know that Teri is one of the most inspirational people I have ever met, and I truly mean this. I met Teri part of the way in my journey of a plant-based/vegan lifestyle choice. At the point I met Teri I was struggling and thirsting for knowledge and low and behold a plant based angel dropped into my life and at the best time possible. Just to back track a few steps, the reason I was struggling was I found it hard to sift through all the bad and negative information about plant based eating, like how will I get enough protein and other misnomers on how a plant based diet wont work. On a personal note I struggled to fit in with my decision to become plant based as a male frankly because it wasn't very manly according to my friends and colleagues. Teri gave me the support, courage and guidance to overcome the negativity by showing me ways to turn negative situations around and also giving me trusted sources and information debunking all the things we think we need from animal proteins. During my time with Teri I had ups and downs and she was with me every step of the way. Her approach to me was comparable to the bond of brotherhood you feel when in battle and you never leave a fallen man or women behind. When I graduated from Nurse Practitioner school, I weighed 212 lbs. I turned to food for comfort to relieve the stress of the challenging program. I munched on snacks every time I studied (which was all the time!). I did well in the program but it cost me my health. I felt terrible. I was obese and not feeling self confident. I went to Weight Watchers and lost about 40 lbs. I lost another 10 lbs by exercising like a maniac every day. I am a pro at weight loss. I have struggled with my weight since I was about 16 years old when I started gaining...yo-yo my entire life. I felt better at the lower weight but was stuck and no amount of exercise would allow my weight to come down further.
About 5 years ago, my knee was really bothering me and I sought the care of an Orthopedic Surgeon...he recommended a knee replacement in the next 3 years. I did not want surgery so I did some research on Anti-Inflammatory eating. I came across Dr. Joel Fuhrman on PBS and what he said made sense to me! I bought his book, Eat to Live, and my husband and I began a Plant based eating style. I lost 19 lbs in the first 6 weeks and my energy level exploded! I knew I was on to something. I felt so good! I had migraine headaches since I was 18 years old and they vanished! My knee pain was remarkably reduced and I ran my first 5K running on that knee in 2016! I now weigh almost 70 lbs less than I did when I graduated from NP school.
My success with this lifestyle change empowered me to share my story and my passion. This brought me to health coaching. I love sharing my passion with others because I know the struggle and I know what is possible. WE HAVE THE POWER to alter our health destiny!
